Grassroots organizers are encouraging community members to attend the Seattle City Council meeting on Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m. to share stories of the lives of Transgender people who have died. This effort comes as the Trump regime continues to rollback the rights of Transgender people, and as Washingtonians will vote on two anti-Trans ballot initiatives this Nov.
“Share your suffering so that maybe your name won’t be counted amongst them,” a flyer shared with TtS stated.
Organizers are encouraging people to bring momentos, relics, and information on the history of Transgender people who are both living and dead.
“Trans suffering is human suffering,” according to the flyer.
If passed by voters, Trans children in Washington state would suffer under two initiatives brought forth by conservative political group, Let’s Go Washington. IL26-001 would in part, allow parents to oversee their child’s educational activities as they relate to sexual orientation and gender identity. IL26-638 would force students to show documentation of their assigned sex at birth, and would require invasive genital exams of all female students as young as 11 years, with boys being exempt.
The grassroots organizers’ ask for community members to attend the council meeting to provide remarks on Trans lives lost also comes during LGBTQ+ History Month. People can attend in-person or virtually, or submit comments to council@seattle.gov.
