From misunderstanding to misunderstood: North Seattle College deadnames Trans graduate

Gray Trammel, TtS intern, wrote about his experience being deadnamed in North Seattle College’s graduation program and the importance of affirming one’s identity. Trammel spoke about how he put years of work into receiving his associate degree, and how his family traveled from Texas to Washington just for the occasion.

“For many people, this might sound like a minor administrative mistake. For me, it wasn’t. The commencement program was something I planned to keep for the rest of my life. As a Transgender man, Gray is the name my professors know, the name my parents chose for me when I transitioned, the one attached to my published journalism and the one that reflects the person who earned that degree. Seeing a different name in the official record of my graduation changed the way I viewed the college and remembered the ceremony,” Trammel wrote.

The game beyond the gates: Hundreds turn out for the “People’s Football Match”

“Kick Israel out of FIFA!” echoed loudly through the streets nearby Seattle’s Lumen Field as thousands of fans headed towards the stadium on June 26 to watch the World Cup match between Iran and Egypt. Some stopped to watch a makeshift 3-v-3 soccer game, dubbed the “People’s Football Match,” hosted by organizers like Hands Off Iran Coalition and Nidal as an act of protest against FIFA, to bring communities together to reclaim football as being for the people, and to stand in solidarity with Iranians, Palestinians, and Lebanese people in opposition to U.S. and Israeli violence.

“While Palestinians in Gaza continue to endure U.S.-Israeli genocide and survive without basic food, water, healthcare, and education, FIFA plans to construct on top of the rubble in Gaza— aiming to raise $75 million for the projects,” read a flyer that Hands Off Iran Coalition members were passing out.

A counterprotest also formed outside the stadium with approximately 40 people; Some waved Israeli flags, alongside the Lion and Sun flag, a symbol which is associated with Iran’s pre-1979 monarchy. They chanted “Long live Israel!” and “Palestinians are terrorists!” At the end of the protest, a counter protester shouted after the group was walking away, “Tell them to go to Palestine, they’ll kill them for protesting.”

King County Republican Party vows to dismantle newly formed team for Trans relocation emergency

To cap off the final day of Pride Month, Victoria Palmer, executive member of the King County Republican Party (KCGOP) said at the Seattle City Council meeting that the party will do what is within its power to dismantle the Trans and Queer Community Stabilization Interdepartmental Team (IDT). The IDT was created just last month in response to a Seattle LGBTQ Commission letter that encouraged city leaders to declare an internal Trans refugee crisis, and to allocate supports and resources for Trans and Queer people fleeing from hostile states to Seattle.

“It is ironic to claim there is a genocide on the Trans community when the truth is that the Trans movement is the genocide upon our people,” Palmer said. “It is unconscionable to persuade a child to damage or destroy the reproductive organs before they’ve even reached the age of consent. The Trans movement is a glamorized form of population control pushed by leftist ideology.”

KCGOP has previously propped-up anti-Trans ballot measures, including IL 26-001, which has the possibility to out Queer students, and IL 26-638, which would force Trans students to play on teams that don’t align with their gender identities. IL 26-638 would also require students in middle and high school female sports to prove their biological sex, including through an invasive medical exam. Both initiatives are heading to the November general election ballot after conservative political action committee, Let’s Go Washington, garnered enough signatures.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson lies about CCTV cameras; activists say there’s one shot left to turn them off completely

Seattle Mayor Wilson lies about CCTV cameras; activists say there’s one shot left to turn them off completely

Over 20 CCTV cameras were installed in the Stadium District ahead of the FIFA World Cup despite mass community push back through protests and town halls. For months, Mayor Katie Wilson lied to constituents by claiming the cameras would be turned off unless there is a credible threat, but they have been active 24/7 due to the “current global and local threat environment.” With the World Cup coming to an end, activists state they have one final shot to get these newly installed cameras shut off completely following festivities.

“Join us in calling on Mayor Wilson to follow through on her public promises to turn-off the police surveillance cameras in the Stadium District immediately after Seattle’s last World Cup match,” Our Seattle stated.

Our Seattle is holding a rally outside of Seattle City Hall on July 7 from 1-2 p.m. that will feature speakers, including 43rd Legislative District Representative Shaun Scott, Edgar Longoria of Entre Hermanos, Moni Tep from the Lavender Rights Project, cyber security expert AJ Randall, disability rights activist and candidate for the Seattle City Council District 5 race Silas James, and others.

ICE arrests 10,000 people in five-day period as Pride Month and FIFA come to a close

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has made 10,000 arrests in a five-day period— doubling its arrest numbers— according to the NYT, and many of the kidnappings haven’t been reaching headlines. The U.S. has been wrapped up in festivities with several cities hosting the FIFA World Cup, including Seattle, and with Pride events and parades.

Former Oklahoma politician Markwayne Mullin took over as DHS Secretary at the end of March, after Kristi Noem was fired. Mullin promised to keep the department out of major headlines after shockwaves rippled through the country following the executions of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, among others.
