Over 20 CCTV cameras were installed in the Stadium District ahead of the FIFA World Cup despite mass community push back through protests and town halls. For months, Mayor Katie Wilson lied to constituents by claiming the cameras would be turned off unless there is a credible threat, but they have been active 24/7 due to the “current global and local threat environment.” With the World Cup coming to an end, activists state they have one final shot to get these newly installed cameras shut off completely following festivities.
“Join us in calling on Mayor Wilson to follow through on her public promises to turn-off the police surveillance cameras in the Stadium District immediately after Seattle’s last World Cup match,” Our Seattle stated.
Our Seattle is holding a rally outside of Seattle City Hall on July 7 from 1-2 p.m. that will feature speakers, including 43rd Legislative District Representative Shaun Scott, Edgar Longoria of Entre Hermanos, Moni Tep from the Lavender Rights Project, cyber security expert AJ Randall, disability rights activist and candidate for the Seattle City Council District 5 race Silas James, and others.
TtS spoke with a community member who works in the restaurant industry in the Stadium District, who told us that the cameras did not make them or the staff feel safer during World Cup celebrations. At one point, the location had to shut-down early because patrons were too drunk and puking in the streets. The source said millions of dollars for the cameras could have been placed back into the community for supports and services.
The weekly Seattle City Council meeting kicks-off right after the rally at 2 p.m., and activists are hopeful to get their remarks on the record.
