TtS weekly round-up August 16-23: Activists visit Real-Time Crime Center, NWDC hunger strike ends, IOF speaking event
August 24, 2026

By Hannah Saunders

We’re back with another weekly reporting round-up from August 16-23. Last week, we published four articles on topics like a former IOF soldier coming to Seattle for a speaking event, the hunger strike at the Northwest Detention Center ending, and more. Let’s take a look at what you may have missed.

Palestinian groups to protest IOF soldier speaking tour in Seattle on August 20

Ira Kohler, born on Long Island, served as a lone soldier under the IOF’s paratrooper brigade after moving to Israel at the age of 21. He authored a book about his experiences, “Once a Paratrooper.”

Palestinian organizations will disrupt the event to let Zionists and their sympathizers know they are not welcome in Seattle. It’s taking place at 6:30 p.m. at the Sephardic Bikur Holim, located at 6500 52nd Ave South. StandWithUs Northwest has publicly announced that there will be security officers, similar to the last event.

Activists visit SPD’s Real-Time Crime Center and leave demanding a dismantling and shutdown to CCTV camera surveillance

On August 17, seven community members involved with the Community Not Cameras coalition took a trip to the Seattle Police Department’s Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC) to better understand the technological capabilities of the City’s CCTV surveillance cameras. The group held a press briefing directly after, and several on the RTCC tour demanded the dismantling of the entire system due to severe safety concerns.

“We must ask the unfathomable question: who exactly is made more safe by these surveillance systems, because it is not immigrants being terrorized by ICE,” AJ Randall, an activist and cyber security engineer, said.

20th hunger strike at the Northwest Detention Center ends, but will conditions change?

The 20th hunger strike at Tacoma’s Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) this year came to an end over the weekend, but may kick back up after today if conditions do not improve. Immigrants being detained initiated a hunger strike on August 12 to demand humane treatment, including access to medical care and food.

This strike came after over 70 people went almost 24 hours without food. Immigrants being detained have reported food portions being too small and comparable to “dog food,” and when served, it has come hours late and smells rancid.

“GEO came to speak with them promising new menus, bigger portions, and better food,” La Resistencia said. “The units will eat until Thursday to see if anything changes. If the conditions remain the same, the units will go back on strike for a longer period of time.”

Seattle Palestinian activists turn IOF soldier speaking event into major flop and celebrate with football match

Former Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) soldier, Ira Kohler, was meant to have a major speaking event in Seattle, hosted by StandWithUs Northwest, on August 20, but it turned out to be a major flop. Seattle’s Palestinian activists tirelessly jumped on and broadcast the event location onto social media, despite StandWithUs Northwest changing it numerous times, including to Mercer Island.

“Zionism is done! It’s the end of Zionism! You’re going to read about it in the history books, and that’s it. Done everywhere across the world!” a speaker with Nidal said, adding how Zionists will soon learn that they will no longer have the ability to host public events or receive public recognition.
