The “pineapple express” arrived in Washington yesterday, and the Puget Sound region will experience high gusts of wind and heavy rainfall throughout the week. A pineapple express is a strong and narrow atmospheric river, where moisture around Hawai’i and the Pacific builds up and expels on the west coast.
Seattle is on flood watch until December 12, and power outages are expected to occur. Here’s what you can do to stay prepared:
- Stock up on supplies, like food, water and beverages, candles, flashlights, batteries, and medications.
- Drive slowly and ensure there is at least one car space between you and the vehicle ahead. Keep a blanket, snacks, and water in your vehicle.
- If you live in an RV or are unhoused, keep clear from trees and power lines.
- Secure or store loose outdoor items, like trash bins, sports equipment, and patio furniture.
If power outages or flooding occur, check in on your neighbors, particularly those who are elderly or living with disabilities. Regularly view updates at weather.gov/sew.
