Seattle’s newest movement to host Trans joy, resilience, and visibility chalk art event outside federal building

Seattle’s newest movement to host Trans joy, resilience, and visibility chalk art event outside federal building
March 30, 2026

By Hannah Saunders

Seattle’s newest group, Gender Equality Movement, “GEM,” is hosting an art-chalk event outside of the Henry M Jackson Federal Building at 6 p.m. on April 3 to celebrate Trans joy, resilience and visibility. GEM went public with its launch over the weekend, and organizers are excited to kick-off its first event.

GEM is an intersectional coalition for gender, racial, and LGBTQ+ equity, and its slogan is “Until the last of us is liberated.” The rally will feature speakers, music, dancing, and Trans Pride flags and chalk will be passed out to attendees. GEM is aiming to fill the entire plaza and surrounding block with chalk art, radical love, and messages of hope for the Trans community. Attendees will then march.

After over a year of hard, dedicated work towards protesting throughout Seattle with signs that read “In the U.S. 80% of sex trafficking victims are female,” and “The Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act excludes immigration detention,” Seattle Handmaids have split from DefundMusk to launch this new venture, which also includes several other activists in the area.

Juniper Blessing is the 19-year-old Trans UW student who lost her life on Sunday. In this video, posted January 13, 2024, Juniper is singing Tom Petty's "Wildflowers." Rest peacefully, Juniper 🥺 What do we know about Christopher Michael Leahy, the man who *allegedly* murdered a Trans UW student on the night of Mother's Day? Some of the memorial chalk before UW directed staff to wash it away this morning Because a sterile looking building is more important than words of love for the murdered Trans student Booking info for the suspect who allegedly stabbed a Trans UW student to death.
