Governor Bob Ferguson will sign two anti-ICE bills that passed through the legislature into law tomorrow at El Centro de la Raza. This news comes after the Governor’s Office leaked a media-only email to its general updates list.
Gov. Ferguson will sign House Bill 2165, which prohibits people impersonating law enforcement officials from using fake badges and other insignia. These impersonators will face charges of criminal impersonation in the second degree.
SB 5855 is the other bill Gov. Ferguson will sign, which bans law enforcement officials from concealing their identities by wearing masks and facial coverings. TtS previously reported that the only action that can be taken under this bill is if an individual sues an agent for damages and attorney fees, among others.
ICE will continue to hide their faces and identities, leaving SB 5855 up to citizens to document as much as they can for enough information to identify the agents and sue them.
Community members can watch the bill signing event here, which starts at 11:00 a.m.
